A perpetual license is a traditional way of purchasing software, meaning you pay for the license up front so you have the right to use the software forever.
With a subscription license, a customer prepays a user fee, entitling them to use the software only during the subscription term. Quark added a subscription option because it has become a common software licensing model, benefitting both the customer and the vendor.
Determining which license model to choose comes down to personal or organizational preference: owning the license with or without extended maintenance and support or having flexibility in terms of budgeting and scalability through a subscription.
Another consideration is that a subscription license entitles the user to the latest version of the software plus applicable updates as long as the subscription is active, whereas the lifecycle of a product with a perpetual license will reach an end of life – meaning software updates and support will stop after a certain point.
AI features are available to all annual subscription customers and perpetual license holders with an active Maintenance and Support Plan on QuarkXPress 2025 (v21.1), at no additional cost.

A perpetual license for a new version of QuarkXPress has an average lifecycle of two years. The subscription license provides access to the latest version of the software plus applicable updates as long as the subscription is active.
One year of maintenance and support is included with new perpetual license purchases. You have the option to buy a maintenance and support extension when the first year expires.
QuarkXPress has two significant new feature releases per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. If you have a subscription license, you are automatically entitled to receive these new versions of QuarkXPress as they are released. If you have a perpetual license, you will need to have an active maintenance and support contract to be eligible to receive these new feature releases. So, if your maintenance and support contract has expired, you will need to renew it to be entitled to new version releases. All new purchases of perpetual licenses come with 12 months’ maintenance and support included. For more information, please see the EULA.
Once your purchase is complete, you will receive an email from Quark with instructions about how to activate the software.
One activation is included with each perpetual or subscription license of QuarkXPress 2026. You may run the software on several different machines, provided that you only run it on one at a time. You will use the license management console to determine which machine runs it when.
Yes, you are entitled to support for QuarkXPress Copydesk if you have an active QuarkXPress Maintenance Plan or an active subscription to QuarkXPress.
