OpenType features in RTL Languages

QuarkXPress uses the Harfbuzz shaping engine to apply the OpenType features in RTL languages.

  • ccmp’: Character composition/decomposition substitution

  • isol’: Isolated character form substitution

  • fina’: Final character form substitution

  • medi’: Medial character form substitution

  • init’: Initial character form substitution

  • rlig’: Required ligature substitution

  • rclt’: Required contextual alternates substitution

  • calt’: Contextual alternates substitution

  • liga’: Standard ligature substitution

  • mset’: Mark positioning via substitution

  • curs’: Cursive positioning

  • kern’: Pair kerning

  • mark’: Mark to base positioning

  • mkmk’: Mark to mark positioning

These OpenType features are enabled by default for RTL scripts in QuarkXPress. On inputting RTL language text, OpenType glyph substitution, and glyph positioning changes occur automatically to allow glyph reordering. There is no separate UI to view/customize these OpenType features in QuarkXPress.
