Watch Variable Fonts TutorialHere’s How to Use Variable Fonts
To use Variable Fonts, first make sure you have your fonts downloaded and added to your Font Manager or installed directly within your system fonts in QuarkXPress 2026. You can also download Variable Fonts directly from Google Fonts using the Font Manager Palette and filter them using the “Variable Fonts” classification option.
You will be able to quickly recognize which font is a Variable Font as they will be marked by one of the supported Variable Fonts icon types (PostScript Outline OpenType Variable Font, TrueType Outline OpenType Variable Font, or TrueType Variable Font).
You can access and customize them from any of your preferred font selection dropdowns Measurement Palette, Style Sheet Dialog and Quick Access Bar.
When you select a Variable Font, a Font Variations icon appears next to the Style option in Font Attributes.
Clicking this opens a pop-up where you can:
-
Adjust axes using sliders, arrow keys, or direct input
-
Preview changes live on your layout
-
Reveal hidden axes using the “Show Hidden Axes” toggle
The amount of axes available is dependant on the font; some fonts will come with plenty of axes to personalize details (e.g. Roboto Flex) and some fonts might have just 1 or 2 axes.
