Why AI settles on the average

Generative AI is built on patterns. At its core, it’s basically the world’s most powerful autocomplete.

When a brief leaves a gap, a model will automatically plug the gap with an answer that has worked often enough elsewhere. The result tends to be plausible, because the plausible average is what AI is designed to pull from.

Back in 2024, researchers Anil Doshi and Oliver Hauser got curious. They built an online experiment to test AI’s effect on creativity. Looking across 293 short stories, they landed on some quite interesting results.

Doshi and Hauser found that access to AI ideas did yield more creative, well-written, enjoyable short stories – especially for less creative writers. But when they zoomed out to look across the full set, they found that the AI-assisted writing looked much more similar.

Before we get called out, we know: the experiment was built around fiction writing rather than layout. So it doesn’t prove that every generated page will look the same.

But it does describe the very real pressure behind AI that’s pushing the sameness we’re all seeing across creative work.

Wider AI use can improve individual results. Across enough work, it can also draw the field towards familiar territory.

One answer can be strong. But a hundred answers made through the same process will push towards sameness.


The page has to push back

Consider an annual report opening spread. The generated layout arrives orderly. The headline sits at a comfortable size, the image has room, and the body copy falls into a clean measure.

Then comes the content.

The chairman’s letter is restrained and specific, but the layout feels upbeat. The headline has enough weight to lead the page, yet its friendliness softens a serious message. Increasing the size would make the problem louder, so the page is designed around a different relationship between type and space.

This is the professional line where design stops being a collection of ‘correct’ settings.

A true designer has the skill to read the content, see the mismatch, and tweak the visual tone.

Each change may be an almost imperceptible micro-tweak in isolation, but the cumulative effect of great professional design decisions is a page built around the content, for the person.

The choices that drive this kind of work are difficult to express before a page exists. They often appear while the designer is in the work, moving between copy and composition until both tell the right story.

AI can speed up the process, but it’s notoriously bad at making quality decisions that fall outside the norm.

It takes a good designer to understand what the material is meant to be doing, and a great one to build a page that pushes in the right places.


Give AI a job, not a brief

The difference between AI assistance and AI direction becomes clear when you hand the tool a narrower responsibility.

An overset paragraph is a solid example. There’s more copy than the text box can hold. The problem is visible, so AI has a specific job, and the designer has a clear result to assess.
