Software license activation and product registration

Although activation and registration are often confused, there are real differences between these two important post-purchase activities.

Software license activation

License activation ensures that software is not used on more computers than authorized by the license, specifically the unauthorized sharing of software through casual copying.

Activation is not the same thing as product registration; activation does not require that you submit your name, e-mail address, or any other personally identifying information. During the activation process, the application gathers some information about the hardware configuration of the computer on which you have installed QuarkXPress, converts that information into an installation code that is unique to that computer, and then sends the installation code to Quark. This installation code is used only to ensure that your copy of QuarkXPress is used only on the computer where it was installed; there is no way to retrieve specific hardware information from an installation code.

In addition to gathering your installation code, Quark also gathers the current IP address of the computer, in order to get a general idea of the geographic region of the computer where QuarkXPress is being installed.

Activation is required in order to run Quark software. Users at sites with several copies of Quark software are governed by Quark License Administrator and do not need to activate individual software licenses.

Product registration

Registering your Quark® desktop product is not a requirement to running the software. Registration helps Quark learn more about you and your business so that we can better serve you. Product registration qualifies you for technical support and allows Quark to send you valuable information about products and promotions.
