QuarkXPress 6.1 Known Issues

Following are some problems that have been discovered in the QuarkXPress® 6.1 software.

  • Windows® XP only: Installing QuarkXPress directly on a parent drive (such as directly on the C or D drive) of your computer without creating a separate folder and then trying to launch it displays an alert stating that one or more required components are corrupt, and the application will not launch. As a workaround, create a folder in the parent drive and install QuarkXPress in that folder.
  • Some words may not hyphenate correctly in Danish when the following hyphenation values are set: Extended 2 hyphenation method (Preferences > Paragraph pane > Hyphenation area > Method pop-up menu), Smallest Word, Minimum Word, and Minimum After field values (Edit Hyphenation & Justification dialog box > Edit Auto Hyphenation area) are 3, 2, and 1 respectively, and Break Capitalized Words is checked.
  • Saving a spot colorized grayscale TIFF file as an EPS file, importing it into a QuarkXPress layout, and printing it with Separations checked (Print dialog box > Layout tab), prints a blank plate of the EPS file. As a workaround, save the EPS file (containing the colorized grayscale Tiff file) in DeviceN color space (a new feature in QuarkXPress 6.0) and then print it with Separations checked.
  • Windows XP only: The URL format for displaying the location of local files in the URL field of the New Hyperlink or Edit Hyperlink dialog box is different for print and Web layouts. In print layouts, the URL name begins with “file://”; in Web layouts, the absolute path of the file displays. However, the inconsistency is only in the display; the hyperlink works correctly in both print and Web layouts. The hyperlink also works correctly if a print layout is converted to a Web layout, exported, and viewed in a browser.
  • Windows XP only: If you use the Windows search engine to search for a QuarkXPress project by entering text that is contained in the project, the search fails. This is a known limitation of Microsoft® Windows XP. As a workaround, use a utility (such as “Agent Ransack,” available at no charge from www.agentransack.com) to search for text that is embedded in a project file.
  • Windows 2000 only: If QuarkXPress Passport® 6.0 is installed on your computer and you run the QuarkXPress 6.1 updater, the updater asks for the “QuarkXPress6.0.msi” file (available on the QuarkXPress 6.0 CD-ROM). To update QuarkXPress on multiple computers, we recommend that you mount the QuarkXPress 6.0 CD-ROM on your network and provide the path to the “QuarkXPress6.0.msi” file.
  • Mac OS® X only: A “Bad file format. [69]” alert may display under the following conditions: Create a QuarkXPress Web project containing a form box and drag the form box to a new QuarkXPress library. Drag the form box from the QuarkXPress library to a new Web project, close both the projects without saving them, quit QuarkXPress, then re-launch QuarkXPress and open the QuarkXPress library. The alert displays and the application is unable to open the library.
  • QuarkXPress 6.1 may unexpectedly quit under the following conditions: Create a QuarkXPress project with a text box containing text, and tag it by dragging the root node of the selected DTD file from the Placeholders palette (Window > Show Placeholders). Click the Toggle Placeholders/Content button (Placeholders palette) three times. Copy the tagged text, create a QuarkXPress project, and paste the content into a text box in the new project. If you save the new project in an earlier version of QuarkXPress, the application may unexpectedly quit.
  • Mac OS X only: If you italicize text in a QuarkXPress Web layout and preview it in the Safari Web browser, the text displays as plain, not italicized. However, this problem does not occur with all fonts and does not occur in the Internet Explorer or Netscape browser.
  • Mac OS X only: If you create a URL hyperlink in a QuarkXPress Web layout without entering “/” (forward slash) in the destination name and preview it in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the displayed hyperlink destination name does not include “http://.” For example, if you create a URL hyperlink with a destination of “http:abc,” the destination for the hyperlink displays as “abc” in the Address field of your browser window.
  • Exporting a QuarkXPress Web layout (containing XML content as XSLT) followed by displaying the exported XML file in a browser displays the shape and attributes of the the picture box incorrectly.
  • Table preferences do not apply to the first cell in a table created in a QuarkXPress Web layout.
  • Mac OS X only: If you create a hyperlink in a QuarkXPress Web layout whose destination is a picture box that contains a Dutch language character, and then click this hyperlink, an alert displays stating “Can't find file. No file exists at (null),” and the destination graphic does not display in the Safari browser. However, performing this sequence using the Safari or Internet Explorer browser in Mac OS X v10.3 does result in the correct graphic being displayed.
  • Mac OS X only: If you install a Quark® License Administrator (QLA) copy of QuarkXPress on a hard drive or partition containing “/” or special characters (e.g., “&”, “#”, “$”, “*” etc.) in the hard drive/partition name and try to launch the application, the following alert displays: “Cannot connect to Quark License Administrator, because the file “QLAClient.properties” could not be found. Please contact your system administrator [4117].” As a workaround, do not include “/” or special characters in hard drive or partition names.
  • If you create a hyperlink in a QuarkXPress Web layout whose destination name begins with “#,” then use the context menu or Style menu (Style > Hyperlink > [hyperlink name]) to apply the hyperlink to a picture box, QuarkXPress unexpectedly quits.
  • Windows 2000 only: If you import a PDF file (exported from QuarkXPress 6.0 or QuarkXPress 6.1 and containing text with Multiple Master Fonts (MMF) embedded) to a QuarkXPress layout and then export the QuarkXPress layout as a PDF file (File > Export > Layout as PDF), an error may occur. If you export the QuarkXPress layout as a PDF file again, the error does not occur. However, printing the QuarkXPress layout to a Xerox printer may generate a PostScript® error.
  • Changing the attribute of any character in a hyphenated word causes that word to lose the hyphenation.
  • Mac OS only: QuarkCMS™ does not load ICC Profiles that you manually copy to the “/Library/Colorsync/Profiles” folder in the QuarkXPress application folder. To determine which profiles are available, launch QuarkXPress, check Color Management Active in the Quark CMS pane of the Preferences dialog box, and then open the Profile Manager dialog box (Utilities > Profile Manager).
  • Mac OS v10.3 only: When you apply the Dante MT or Dante Expert MT font to a character to display a fraction, some fractions may not display or print correctly.
  • Windows XP only: If you import a large (greater than 100MB) EPS, TIFF, or PDF file to a picture box which is smaller than the picture being imported and apply Fit Picture to Box, then export the QuarkXPress layout as a PDF file (File > Export > Layout as PDF), no PDF file is generated. As a workaround, uncheck OPI Active in the PDF Export Options window OPI tab when you export such a layout as a PDF file.
  • Mac OS X only: QuarkXPress now classifies a font as corrupt if the Font ID and Font Family ID are different. This may cause an alert to display stating that a font (that is otherwise usable) is corrupt.
  • Mac OS v10.3 only: If you apply fonts belonging to the American Typewriter font family using the Measurements palette, the fonts may not be applied. Apply fonts belonging to this family using the Style menu (Style > Font > [font name]) to avoid this problem.
  • Mac OS X only: If you collect for output (File > Collect for Output) to a network volume for which you have “read only” permission, QuarkXPress will quit unexpectedly.
  • Mac OS only: If you save a QuarkXPress 6 project located on your network and as a QuarkXPress 5 document with the same name and in the same location, a “File not found” alert may display. If you re-save the same document as a QuarkXPress 6 project without changing the name and location, the alert also displays. However, the problem does not occur if you save the QuarkXPress 5 document (with the same name and in the same location) as a QuarkXPress 6 project a second time, or if you save it as a QuarkXPress 6 project on your computer’s hard drive.
  • *Note: You cannot open the document saved as version 5 in the QuarkXPress 5 application. To open the document in QuarkXPress 5, change either the name or location of the document while saving it as a version 5 document.

  • Mac OS v10.3 only: If you print or export a QuarkXPress layout containing text with certain versions of Zapf Dingbats fonts applied as a PDF file (File > Export > Layout as PDF), an alert displays stating that the font is corrupt and the desired output might not be generated.
  • Mac OS X only: QuarkXPress layouts containing the Wild Thing TrueType font cannot be printed if the font is installed in the user’s font directory (“user//Library/Fonts”). To avoid this problem, install the font in the system’s font directory (“/Library/Fonts”).
  • Mac OS X only: If you print a QuarkXPress layout containing text with Bitstream Garamond Narrow TrueType font applied to a PostScript printer, the print job flushes. The QuarkXPress application stops responding if you try to export the same layout as a PDF file (File > Export > Layout as PDF).

Hardware key issues

  • Mac OS X only: If you quit QuarkXPress and remove the hardware key before logging off, then log on again after 5 minutes, re-connect the hardware key to the computer, and launch QuarkXPress, the application will not detect the hardware key and will not launch. However, QuarkXPress will detect the hardware key under the following circumstances: if you re-connect the hardware key and log on in less than 5 minutes; if you restart the computer; or if you do not remove the hardware key before you log off.

QuarkXPress Help

  • Mac OS X v10.3 only: Double-clicking a help book does not open the book.
