QuarkXPress 7

QuarkXPress 7.0 Known Issues

Following is a list of known issues in QuarkXPress® 7.0. Quark is working to resolve these issues.

Fonts

  • The Adobe® Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM fonts are unavailable in QuarkXPress.
  • If you apply the bold and italic type styles to text that uses an East Asian OpenType® outline font and then export the layout in PDF format, the text in the PDF displays as outlines rather than as bold and italic text. To avoid this issue, apply either bold or italic formatting to the text, but not both.
  • If you use a Type 1 version of the Zapf Dingbats font on a page, save the page as an EPS file with the Download box for that font unchecked (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > Fonts pane), and then import the resulting EPS file into another layout, the Zapf Dingbat® characters fail to display and print. To ensure that your characters display and print, check Download for the font when saving the page as an EPS file, or use an OpenType or TrueType® version of the Zapf Dingbats font.
  • If you use a Multiple Masters font on a page, save the page as an EPS file with the Download box for that font unchecked (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > Fonts pane), import the resulting EPS file into another layout, and then print the layout or export the layout as a PDF file, the Multiple Masters characters display in the Courier font. To ensure that your characters display correctly, check Download for the font when saving the page as an EPS file.

Display

  • If you select a Composition Zones™ item and drag another item in front of it, the Composition Zones item appears to remain selected and redraws incorrectly until you release the mouse button. To avoid this issue, deselect the Composition Zones item before you drag another item in front of it.
  • If you select text inside a box that is behind other boxes, the highlight around the selected text can obscure the outline of boxes that are positioned in front. You should be able to see the outline of the frontmost box even when you select text in the rearmost box. To force a refresh of the screen, deselect the box that contains the text, then reselect it.
  • If you import an EPS file that uses the LAB color space, export the layout in PDF format using an output setup that uses the As Is or DeviceN color model, and then import the resulting PDF file into a picture box, the preview of the EPS file is corrupt. To avoid this issue, import the EPS file into the final layout instead of including it in a PDF file.
  • If you format text with the outline type style, export the layout in PDF format using the Composite CMYK and Spot output setup, and then import the resulting PDF file into a new layout, the outlined text displays incorrectly. To ensure that your outlined text displays correctly, place the outlined text in the layout you are printing instead of importing it in a PDF file.
  • The previews of EPS files that you create with the File > Save Page as EPS command are sometimes flawed. However, the flawed previews do not affect output. To bypass previews and view imported EPS files at full resolution, make sure View > Full Res Previews is checked.
  • If you import an Adobe Illustrator® PDF file that contains a Multiple Masters font and then check View > Full Res Previews, the Multiple Masters characters display in a system default font. However, this system default font preview does not affect output. To view the font as it will display in final output, make sure View > Full Res Previews is unchecked.

Output

  • Colors in an EPS or PDF file might print incorrectly if you follow this procedure:
    1. Apply CMYK-model colors to items in a layout.
    2. Use the Composite CMYK output setup to export the layout in PDF or EPS format.
    3. Import the PDF or EPS file into a new layout.
    4. Use an output setup that uses the Composite Hexachrome® color model to print the new layout.
To ensure that colors print correctly, place the CMYK-color items in the layout you are printing instead of importing them in a PDF or EPS file.
  • If you import a bitmap or grayscale image, set the picture box background to a color with an opacity of less than 100% and more than 0%, and then resize the box so that the picture box background does not display around the image, the picture should knock out of the picture box background. Instead, the picture overprints the box background color. To make the picture knock out of the box background, use a color with 100% opacity for the box background, apply a color to the picture or picture background, or resize the picture box so that the picture box background color displays.
  • If you import a PSD file that uses the Duotone color mode and then attempt to export the layout as a PDF file, the export fails. To successfully export the layout, convert the PSD file to RGB or CMYK color mode.
  • If you import an EPS file that uses the Duotone color mode and then export the layout in PDF format, the EPS file displays as a black box in the PDF. To make the EPS file display correctly in the PDF, convert the EPS file to RGB or CMYK color mode prior to export.
  • If you import an EPS file that uses the Monotone variation of the Duotone color mode, you cannot print the layout. To print the layout, convert the EPS file to RGB or CMYK color mode.
  • If you import an EPS file that uses the Duotone color mode, save the page as an EPS file using PostScript® Level 2 (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > Advanced pane > PostScript Level drop-down menu) and the As Is output setup (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > Color pane > Setup drop-down menu), import the resulting EPS file, and then print the layout using PostScript Level 3 (File > Print > Advanced pane > PostScript Level drop-down menu), a PostScript error occurs. To avoid this issue, save the page as an EPS file using PostScript Level 3.
  • If you create an EPS or PDF file that contains a blend that is set to overprint, import that file into a picture box, apply an opacity value between 0% and 100% (non-inclusive) to the imported picture, and then print separations of the layout using PostScript Level 3 (File > Print > Advanced pane > PostScript Level drop-down menu), the blend knocks out of the background instead of overprinting. To make the blend overprint, print the layout using PostScript Level 2.
  • If you import an EPS file that uses the Duotone color mode and use the Composite CMYK and Spot output setup (File > Print > Color pane > Setup drop-down menu) to print the layout using PostScript Level 3 (File > Print > Advanced pane > PostScript Level drop-down menu), a PostScript error occurs. To avoid this issue, print the file using PostScript Level 2.
  • If you save a grayscale image from Adobe Photoshop® in DCS 2.0 format using the "Single File DCS, No Composite" option, import the image into a picture box with a background of None, place the picture box in front of another box that contains a background color other than black, and then print separations of the layout or export separations of the layout in PDF format, the image appears on all four plates instead of only on the black plate. To make the image print on only the black plate, remove the colored box from behind the picture box.
  • If you import a Microsoft® Excel® chart, export the layout in PDF format, import the resulting PDF file, and then print separations of the layout, an error occurs. To avoid this issue, print the layout in composite mode or save the chart as an EPS file before importing it into QuarkXPress.
  • If you import a PDF file that uses a spot color and then export the layout as a PDF file using Separations mode (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > Color pane > Mode drop-down menu), the export fails. To avoid this issue, export the PDF file in Composite mode.
  • If you import a picture into a picture box with a frame, position the image so that it touches the frame, and then export the layout in PDF format with OPI Active checked (File > Save Page as EPS > Options button > OPI pane), the image shifts in the box in the exported PDF. To make sure the image displays correctly, uncheck OPI Active before exporting the layout.

Web layouts

  • If you check Convert to Graphic on Export (Item > Modify) for a text box in a Web layout and then export the layout in HTML format, the text in the box does not always display in the exported page the same way it displays in QuarkXPress.
  • If you select a picture box in a Web layout, choose Item > Modify, display the Export tab, include a special character in the File Name field, and then export the layout in HTML format, the picture does not display in Internet Explorer and Safari™. The same is true for text boxes for which you check Convert to Graphic on Export (Item > Modify). To ensure that the picture displays, do not enter special characters in the File Name field.
  • Before you can import SWF files, you must install the Macromedia® Flash® plug-in, which is available from the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com.

Miscellaneous

  • Mac® OS only: You might be unable to launch QuarkXPress if the name of the folder that contains the QuarkXPress application folder includes a special character. To ensure that QuarkXPress launches, do not use special characters in this folder name.
  • Windows® only: If you save a project on a Linux server, log on to the server as a different user who has full access to the project file, open and update the project, and then try to save the project, an alert displays to notify you that access is denied. To avoid this issue, log on to the server as the user who created the project file.
  • QuarkXPress is unable to import a PDF file that uses version 1.6 of the PDF format. To ensure that you can import a PDF file, save it in PDF 1.5 format.
  • If you export a text file in RTF format from QuarkXPress 6.x, and then import that file in QuarkXPress 7, some content can be lost. To avoid this problem, open the RTF file in Microsoft Word, save the file in Word format, and then import the resulting Word file into QuarkXPress 7.
  • If you associate a layout with an Output Specification that has an Image Color Space setting of LAB, import a PDF file that uses the LAB color space into the layout, and then evaluate the layout (File > Job Jackets > Evaluate Layout), the project incorrectly fails the Color Space evaluation. Although the layout fails the evaluation, you can still send it to output.
  • If you associate a project with an Output Specification that has an Image Color Space setting of 1-bit, import a PDF or EPS file that uses the 1-bit color space into that layout, and then evaluate the layout (File > Job Jackets > Evaluate Layout), the project incorrectly fails the color space evaluation. Although the layout fails the evaluation, you can still send it to output.
  • QuarkXPress 7 cannot import a print style that was created in a previous version.
  • If you display the Find/Change palette, press F3 to minimize the palette, click the layout, and then press F3 to maximize or restore down the layout window, you cannot use F3 to maximize the Find/Change palette. To restore the Find/Change palette, close and then reopen the palette.
  • A paragraph style sheet loses its association with a new character style sheet if you follow this procedure:
    1. Display the Edit Paragraph Style Sheet dialog box.
    2. Choose New from the Character Style drop-down menu to create a character style sheet.
    3. Click OK to close the Edit Paragraph Style Sheet dialog box.
    4. Choose Edit > Undo Edit Style Sheet.
    5. Again choose Edit > Undo Edit Style Sheet.
  • Performance of QuarkVista™ can be slow compared with other image-editing tools, especially when working with large image files. To improve the performance of QuarkVista, apply effects by dragging sliders wherever possible instead of entering values into fields.
  • If you import a PSD file that contains a spot color from one of several PANTONE® libraries, the following alert displays, and an incorrect spot color is added to the Colors palette: "Custom color profiles may be missing." Affected libraries include PANTONE Metallic Coated, PANTONE Pastel Coated, PANTONE Pastel Uncoated, and PANTONE Solid Matte. To avoid this issue, use a different color library.
  • If you choose File > Get Picture and select a grayscale PSD file that contains an alpha channel, the picture is identified in the Get Picture dialog box as an imported CMYK picture. After import, you cannot apply a color or background color to the picture. To avoid this issue, save the picture without an alpha channel.
  • If you import a picture into a picture box, convert the picture box into a Composition Zones item (Item > Composition Zones > Create), hide or rename the picture file, and then print the layout, no alert displays, and the full-resolution picture is not included in the output. To avoid this issue, select the Composition Zones item, choose Item > Composition Zones > Edit, and then choose Utilities > Usage to verify picture usage before printing.
