Precision Typography

Typography is an art form, and QuarkXPress® provides the tools you need to create powerful works of typographical art.

If you’re a perfectionist, QuarkXPress provides all of the tools you need to reach perfection.

If you’re not, QuarkXPress provides presets and default behaviors that make your work look professional even when you’re not paying attention to the details.

Features

Hanging Characters

Create Perfectly Aligned Margins

The QuarkXPress® Hanging Characters feature lets you specify that particular characters should “hang” outside the margins of a paragraph, so that the characters at the beginning and ending of every line in the paragraph align perfectly with one another.

For example, you can create a hanging character class that contains hyphens, periods, commas, quotation marks, and apostrophes; specify when the characters should hang (at the beginning of the line, at the end of the line, or as a drop cap), and even control the amount of the hang (from 0% to 100%).

Then you can combine several hanging character classes into a hanging character set and apply that hanging character set to paragraphs or paragraph style sheets. You can use the presets included with QuarkXPress, or create your own. You can even share hanging character classes and sets within a workgroup.

Bullets and Numbering

Take Command of Lists and Outlines with Bullet, Numbering, and Outline Styles

The Bullet, Numbering, and Outline Styles feature makes it easier than ever to create and maintain bulleted lists, numbered lists, and outlines in QuarkXPress®. Instead of manually inserting bullets and numbers and manually formatting paragraphs to accommodate them, you can simply choose a bullet or numbering style from a drop-down menu.

Instead of manually adjusting indents in a multilevel outline, you can change indents at the click of a button without creating local formatting. And instead of manually maintaining the numbering for a list, you can let QuarkXPress do the job for you.

How it Works

  1. If you’re in a hurry, just apply one of the default bullet or numbering styles to your text
  2. If you’ve got complex data to display, create your own outline styles with whichever bullet characters and number formats you need
  3. Associate bullet, numbering, and outline styles with paragraph style sheets

At a glance:

  • Maintain automatic bullets and numbering when importing and exporting text in Microsoft® Word format
  • Create custom bullet, number and outline styles
  • Configure up to nine unique outline levels
  • Associate character style sheets with bullet and numbering styles or inherit formatting from the paragraph
  • Control bullet and number offset, alignment, and relative or absolute size
  • Easily access Bullet, Numbering, and Outline Styles from the Measurements palette
  • Take advantage of automatic renumbering
  • Include bullet, numbering, and outline styles in Job Jackets®

Page Grids and Grid Styles

Maintain Total Control Over Text and Object Alignment

With QuarkXPress®, you can use page grids and grid styles to make sure that lines of text in separate boxes align with one another on the same baselines. You can apply different grids to different pages, and even apply different grids to boxes on the same page. When used in conjunction with master page guides, grid styles can shave hours off of tedious alignment tasks.

Page grids can be applied on a page-by-page basis, allowing you to use different alignment options on different pages of the same layout.

A grid style specifies a different set of alignment options, based on font size, spacing, cell alignment (for East Asian typography), and other options. You can apply grid styles with a Grid Styles Palette.

On a paragraph-by-paragraph basis, you can control whether text aligns to the grid style applied to the box it’s in, or to the grid of the page it’s on.

You can show and hide grid lines at will, and even specify which lines (for example, topline, centerline, and baseline) display when a given grid style is applied.

Linkster

Unlink and Relink Text Boxes Without Overflow

Linkster® lets you unlink text boxes without causing overflow; all of the text in each box in a chain simply stays in that box after the unlinking operation. Linkster also lets you relink boxes that have been unlinked this way (or that just already contain text). This can be helpful in situations when you need to keep content on a particular page from moving to a different page when you edit the text flow.

How it Works

  • Select a box or boxes, display the Linkster dialogue box, and then use the controls to link, unlink, or relink the boxes

At a glance:

  • Link or unlink one box, several boxes, or all of the boxes in a layout
  • Link or unlink boxes on non-contiguous pages
  • Specify whether pages are sequence-based or section-based

Story Editor

Concentrate On Text Without the Distraction of Layout

The QuarkXPress® Story Editor feature lets you work with text in an easy-to-read, word-processor-like view — regardless of how the text looks in the layout. This can be extremely useful when the text is small, rotated, spread over several pages, or otherwise difficult to read in the layout. You can view text using the font and size of your choice, and edit it without affecting its formatting in the layout.

At a glance:

  • View and edit text with the font and size you want
  • Optionally view and apply bold and italic
  • View line breaks as they occur in the layout
  • Create a new view or window for the Story Editor feature and view the text and the layout at the same time

NEW East Asian Typography Features
in Every Edition

Maintain Total Control over Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean Layouts

QuarkXPress® lets layout artists work with East Asian typographical concepts such as vertical story text, hanging characters, punctuation character width handling, phonetic text reading (rubi), font sets, character grids, grouped characters, and intelligent font mapping.

QuarkXPress includes deep and wide support for East Asian typography. You can combine vertical and horizontal story text in the same layout, and group sets of characters (such as acronyms) to flow properly in vertical stories.

You can:

  • Enable and disable East Asian Typography features in the QuarkXPress Preferences.
  • Control the width of full-width punctuation characters depending on where they fall relative to the beginning of the line, the middle of the line, the end of the line, and other punctuation characters.
  • Maintain perfectly aligned margins with predefined classes and sets of hanging characters, or configure your own classes and sets for different uses.
  • Apply phonetic reading text (rubi) to text, and even automatically pull rubi text from the system dictionary for some languages.

When it comes to character grids, QuarkXPress is the best. You can define different page grids for different pages, or even for different boxes on the same page. You can precisely control baseline position, cell alignment, and whether guides appear on the topline, centerline, baseline, or for the full cell.

QuarkXPress is also smart about East Asian fonts. If a font is missing, the Font Fallback feature makes sure that a recognisable character displays, rather than a box. And custom font mapping rules enable you to properly handle projects that use UDA/VDA characters.

Glyphs Palette

Easily Access Any Character

The Glyphs Palette provides instant visual access to any character in any font, including modern Unicode® and OpenType® fonts. You can insert any character into text by double-clicking or click-and-dragging. You can even save favorite characters for easy access.

Using the Glyphs Palette you can search for glyph shapes you don’t know how to type, or browse all the characters available in a particular font.

Convert Text to Picture and Text Boxes

In QuarkXPress, you can select text — just a few characters, or even an entire paragraph — and convert it into boxes with a single command. Then you can fill the boxes with colours, an image, or even text.

Give your designs flare and create special effects by converting text to a box, then importing a picture into the box. You also can use text-to-box conversion to avoid sending a font file when submitting for output.

Run Text Along a Complex Path

QuarkXPress lets you create any shape you can imagine with industry-standard Bézier tools — and then run text along that shape, with full typographic control.

You can use the common technique text-on-a-path to create various effects.

Create Custom Kerning Pairs and Tracking Curves

You can use the automatic kerning table built into a font, or override it with your own kerning pair values. You can also create custom tracking curves that adjust the spacing between characters depending on the point size of the text.

QuarkXPress® gives you control over text with custom kerning pairs and tracking curves. By setting up your own kerning pairs you can automatically control spacing between letters to fit your requirements. This saves time so you don’t have to adjust kerning in each individual instance.

Special Characters

Easily Access Any Special Character

QuarkXPress gives you multiple ways to insert special characters. You can use the Glyphs Palette to view all of the characters in any font, and easily insert them into a document. You can use a menu item to insert invisible characters and other types of special characters. And QuarkXPress provides keyboard shortcuts for the most-often-used special characters.

Can’t remember how to type special characters? No worries, QuarkXPress® provides quick access to special characters so you don’t lose time searching for them.

Create Custom H&J Specifications

The H&J (Hyphenation & Justification) feature lets you completely control the way words hyphenate (or prevent them from hyphenating at all). The H&J feature also provides complete control over the way text is justified. You can create multiple H&J settings and apply them to different paragraphs in the same text.

In QuarkXPress® you can control hyphenation and justification rules to precisely control the line breaks in your text.

Take Advantage of Unicode and OpenType

With full support for Unicode and OpenType, QuarkXPress gives you easy access to swash characters, discretionary ligatures, alternate versions of characters, ordinals, alternate metrics, and many other font features.

QuarkXPress® provides standard OpenType® support for high-end fonts.

Font Fallback

Deal Intelligently with Missing Fonts

The Font Fallback feature ensures that if a font is missing, a suitable alternate font is substituted — so instead of seeing boxes or question marks, you see characters.

QuarkXPress® helps you anticipate common design and layout challenges, such as missing glyphs. Using the Font Fallback feature, you can specify how to handle text you place in your layouts that the current font doesn’t support.

Create Custom Underline Styles

You can create your own underline styles for text, with different widths, colours, shades, and offsets.

You can add character to your designs by changing the colour, shade, width, and offset of your underlines.

Make an Impression with
Professional Text Formatting

QuarkXPress brought high-end typography to the desktop over two decades ago —and since then, it’s only been getting better. With QuarkXPress, you can make any typographical dream into a reality.

Apply Kerning and Tracking

The kerning and tracking features in QuarkXPress let you achieve perfect spacing between character pairs — automatically or manually, it’s up to you — and copyfit text by manipulating the space between every character in a word, line, or paragraph.

Placeholder Text

Generate Lorem Ipsum Text in a Snap

Do you need to fill a box with text just to see what the final layout will look like when the content is ready? QuarkXPress makes it easy with the Insert Placeholder command.

Waiting for copy to fill in your design? You can use placeholder text when you need copy but don’t have the final text.
