Office Depot to Upgrade to QuarkXPress 8 Across its Entire European Operation

Leading Global Online Retailer to Produce all Marketing Collateral in QuarkXPress 8

LONDON - 7/16/2009 - Quark today announced that Office Depot, a global supplier of office products and services, has chosen to upgrade to QuarkXPress® 8 across its entire European organization. The world’s number two online retailer, which has its European headquarters in the Netherlands, will create its full range of marketing materials — including all direct mail and over seven hundred catalogues — in QuarkXPress 8. Office Depot’s international division, which operates outside North America, sells through direct mail catalogs, contract sales forces, Internet sites, and retail stores in 18 countries in Europe, and employs around 11,000 people across Europe.

Committed to Quark
The release of QuarkXPress 8 a year ago, received a huge amount of positive feedback in the marketplace, and subsequently a large number of customers demonstrated their ongoing commitment to Quark by upgrading — including Cal Poly, Hallpressen, Airbus, BNP Paribas, Credit Mutuel-CIC, and Midland News Association. The recent decision by Office Depot shows that this trend continues one year later.

“We are completely committed to Quark and chose to upgrade to QuarkXPress 8 not just because we are familiar with the product, but because we know that QuarkXPress is a reliable and powerful tool. In addition, there are huge savings to be made by choosing QuarkXPress, as the existing knowledge of our user base will reduce training costs,” said Gert Vigener, Office Depot’s European Director of Creative Services. “We have recently updated our hardware and are now running on Mac OS 10 Leopard, which was another key reason for upgrading. Quark consistently leads the way by supporting the latest technology, and in this case QuarkXPress 8 was the first major design and publishing tool to support this platform.”

Global Publishing
With operations spread across Europe, Office Depot needed to be confident that QuarkXPress 8 could provide efficient, trouble-free publishing, regardless of the language.

“We publish tens of thousands of pages every year in more than seven different languages,” continued Vigener, “and as QuarkXPress 8 supports more than thirty languages, this enables us to substantially streamline our multiple-language publishing, eliminate many unnecessary costs, and dramatically improve quality and productivity. The new global file format, hyphenation, and spelling capabilities of QuarkXPress 8 mean that we can be sure our team works together seamlessly, and the multiple-language user interface means our designers can work in the language they choose.”

Improve Efficiencies
“We are constantly looking to reduce costs while increasing quality and efficiency, which was a key reason we chose to upgrade,” added Vigener. “We had been using QuarkXPress 6.5, but decided to upgrade so that we could benefit from a range of new features, including Job Jackets, which helps us to eliminate errors and streamline our publishing process. Our designers can also take advantage of the redesigned user interface, which takes existing tools and expands their functionality in an intuitive way to make the user instantly more efficient at day-to-day tasks. Features like drop shadows and transparency, which are both used regularly in catalog production, are also proving to be very useful.”
